The Volga German Buildings Collection features photographs taken by Patty Nicholas, Forsyth Library, and Mitch Weber, University Photographer. The Catholic Churches, cemeteries, and schools in Ellis and Rush Counties are the subjects of this collection. The settlers who emigrated from the Volga Region of Russia to these counties in Kansas established the towns that are featured in this collection. The first Volga-German settlers arrived in Ellis County in the spring of 1876. They brought with them to America, their customs, traditions, heritage and faith. These settlers established the following communities in Ellis County: Catherine, Herzog, Munjor, Pfeifer, and Schoenchen. The lone settlement in Rush County was Liebenthal. Other towns founded later were Antonino, Vincent and Walker, all in Ellis County.
