Abstract
For most individuals who live and work in an area dominated by a single industry, great interest and concern usually exists as to the actual impact this basic source of economic activity exerts on the area. This interest is certainly evident in many areas of central and western Kansas where petroleum production generates a large proportion of total income. Essentially, it has been this interest, along with the inherent concern of one who has spent thirteen years working in the oil fields of western Kansas, which has prompted the author to undertake this study.
