Abstract
Sculpture is the unity of idea, process and composition. The idea being the personal content of the piece, the process in this creative thesis being direct carving in wood and emphasis of this thesis placed upon the compositional elements of line and shape. Direct carving in wood demands recognition of certain characterstics; the organic quality that is unique to natural wood and the linear grain pattern, also unique to wood. By using these two characteristics to one's advantage, direct carving in wood can be more successful. The manuscript contains photographic slides not appended to this PDF.
