Abstract

The conglomerate merger is one of the most important methods of business combination in use today. A conglomerate merger provides an avenue for today's business and industrial leaders to develop dynamic and operational business empires just as the trust and the holding company have done previously in the American business world. The purpose of this study was to examine the development of business combinations to the present phase of conglomerate mergers and to analyze selected financial advantages and disadvantages identified with conglomerate mergers. The study was developed primarily from information found in books, magazines, and journal s in the Fort Hays Kansas State Library and from results obtained in a questionnaire which was sent to sixty industrial companies. The questionnaires were sent only to companies that had completed a conglomerate merger or were in the process of carrying out a conglomerate merger. The general findings of the study were that the conglomerate merger is of primary importance today and that there definitely are financial advantages to be gained from a conglomerate merger. However, there are also a number of financial problems in any conglomerate merger that must be overcome in order for the merger to be successful.
