Description

This black-and-white 12-page newsletter is a typed document about the Walker Army Air Base. This document is listed as Volume 1, Number 9, published on Friday, April 16, 1943. The Walker Air Base was located between Walker and Victoria, Kansas. The top of the first page features a printed illustration titled “Walker Talker,” depicting an air force plane accompanied by an air force base and tower. Page 1 has a large photograph titled “Sweetheart of Walker Army Air Base,” depicting a woman named Jeff Donnell (Jean Marie Donnell), an American actress, in a floor-length dress, posing for the camera. The picture is hand-signed by her and accompanied by a handwritten message reading “To the Walker Talkers– Congratulations and best wishes!” The bottom of page 2 has a printed illustration of a wolf character signed by Cpl. Sansone, and the top of page 3 has a printed illustration of an air force insignia with wings. The left column of page 4 has the illustrated title “Concert,” accompanied by a treble clef music staff with musical notes depicting a portion of the song “Shave and a Haircut.” The right column on page 4 is titled “Rambling in the dark, accompanied by an illustration. Printed sideways along the length of page 5 is an edition of the comic Male Call by Milton Caniff, consisting of 3 panels. The printed image at the top of page 6 is signed by Cpl. Sansone, and the image at the bottom of the page is signed by Cpl. Henry McAlear. At the bottom of page 6 is a 3-panel comic signed by Sgt. Holly. The left column of page 7 is titled “Chevrons,” accompanied by chevrons indicating the rank of a sergeant and a corporal. The top of page 8 is titled “Your Week of Fun.” The left column is titled “Things to do,” and the right is titled “Places to go.” The middle of page 8 features the illustrated title “Movies.” Page 11 features an illustration of a man's head wearing a military dress hat, playing the bugle. The top of page 12 is titled “Sports” in hand-drawn bubble letters. Each page has two holes punched at the top.
