Description

This black-and-white 11-page newsletter is a typed document about the Walker Army Air Base. This document is listed as Volume 1, Number 8, which was published on Friday, April 9, 1943. The Walker Air Base was located between Walker and Victoria, Kansas. Page 9 of the newsletter is misprinted as Page 7. The misprint does not affect the content of pages 7 or 9. The top of the first page features a printed illustration titled “Walker Talker,” depicting an air force plane accompanied by an air force base and tower. Page 1 includes a large photograph of a man, dressed in a dark shirt and pants, playing table tennis in front of a small crowd of men watching from the sidelines. The picture is titled “Col. Cahill Puts Up a Good Fight.” At the top of page 2 is a handwritten title reading “Rambling in the Dark.” There is also a black-and-white photograph of 6 men standing side by side on page 2. The men are part of the Base Table Tennis Team. 3 of the men are wearing light shirts, and 3 are wearing dark shirts. All the men are wearing dark pants. Page 3 has 3 printed illustrations, varying in size. Page 4 has a printed illustration at the bottom. Printed sideways along the length of page 4 is an edition of the comic Male Call by Milton Caniff, consisting of 4 panels. At the top of page 5 is a hand-drawn illustration reading “Your Week of Fun” in bubble letters. Beneath the title, there is handwritten text reading “Things to do” on the left and “Places to go” on the right. The top of page 6 has handwritten writing and illustrations. The left column on page 6 is titled “Third Weather” between two illustrations of the sun. The left illustration of the sun is frowning, while the right illustration is smiling. The right column on page 6 is titled “Walkerettes” and features two illustrations of woman stick figures to the left and right of the handwritten title. The bottom of page 6 has handwriting reading “Please!” with an exclamation point. The top of page 7 is hand-illustrated to read “Sports” in all capital letters. The bottom of page 8 has a handwritten title-column reading “Officers-Bawl.” Page 9 has two handwritten titles. The left title reads “Out of the Frying Pan,” and the right title reads “38th Airdrome SQ.” Beneath the right title is an illustration of an airplane propeller with wings. The insignia was commonly used during World War II for Air Force cadets. The left column on page 10 has a handwritten title, “Last Will of Adoplh Hitler,” with a drawing of a head with a mustache and a side part. The right column on page 10 is titled “G.I. U.S.A.,” which is also handwritten. To the right of this title is a drawing of a flag, and beneath the title is an illustration of a head with a pointed military cap on. The left column of page 11 is titled “Chevrons,” which is handwritten. To the left and right of this title are drawings of military chevrons. The left chevron has 3 lines, indicating the rank of a sergeant, and the right chevron has 2 lines, indicating the rank of a corporal. Each page has 2 small holes punched at the top.
