Defying Dictators: What WWII Resistance Can Teach Us About Defending Democracy
Abstract
This session features four FHSU students, moderated by Dr. Amber N. Nickell and Professor Hollie Marquess. As part of the History Program’s 16‑week course, WWII Resistance, Fort Hays State University students traveled to Germany and France to study resistance movements firsthand, visiting sites such as Dachau, Normandy, and the White Rose memorial in Munich. In this talk, three FHSU students will share their reflections on how ordinary people resisted authoritarianism and upheld democratic values in times of crisis, highlighting how lessons from the past can inspire renewed commitment to democracy and civic responsibility today.
