Abstract
Data communications has been identified as a new technology in the communication field. It involves hardware methods people use to exchange information. The new technologies have had tremendous impact on the tradition communication methods. It was the goal of this thesis to clarify standards which have been established for guaranteeing successful data communication, thereby making human communication more efficient and effective. After surveying the existing literature, the results of the study described international standards within three major data communication areas: Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model, Local Area Network (LAN), and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). The description provided was not technical or detailed but was confined to a presentation of basic concepts. Finally, flow charts about standards and standards setting organizations were developed.
