Abstract
The purpose of the investigator was to investigate knowledge and attitudes of normal and mentally retarded people concerning human sexuality. A further purpose was to investigate the ways in which the knowledge and attitudes of mentally retarded people are similar and different from people termed normal concerning sexuality. The results of the present study would seem to support the following generalizations: (1) the similarities in knowledge of the retarded subjects and the normal subjects concerning human sexuality would appear to be due to a common cultural background; (2) the differences in knowledge of the retarded subjects and the normal subjects concerning human sexuality would appear to be due to a lack of sex education for the retarded; (3) the similarities in attitudes of the retarded subjects and the normal subjects concerning human sexuality would appear to be due to a common cultural background; and (4) the differences in attitudes of the normal subjects and the retarded subjects concerning human sexuality would appear to be due to the normal subjects ability to use resources such as reading to better advantage than the retarded.
