Abstract

Royall Tyler’s "The Contrast", the first successfully produced American comedy, presents an exciting challenge in costume design and construction. Tyler’s characters move through a world filled with contrasts in habits, customs, manners, and fashions. Constant allusion to period fashion in the script, the director’s concept, and actor needs produce an array of problems to be solved by the costume designer.
