Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the cloze readability procedure as a predictor of student comprehension difficulties in social studies textbooks when compared with standardized reading achievement test scores. As a secondary purpose, the comprehension difficulty levels of elementary social studies materials published by two different companies, but designated for the same grade level, was studied.
