Abstract
A study of the effect of a simple, easily managed token reinforcement system applied to general academic material, in the form of mathematics and spelling assignments. This project was conducted in the Logan consolidated school system during the spring semester of the 1974 school year. This reinforcement system required a minimum of teacher time in administration, and a negligible cost to the school. It was applied to 21 students, for whom parental permission was received, in a typical public second grade classroom. The increases in mathematics scores were in the predicted direction, though not statistically significant. The decrease in mathematics scores upon withdrawal of the reinforcers was statistically significant. The spelling scores did not move in the predicted direction.
