Abstract
The study of various approaches related to the considerable body of criticism centered on Billy~ has been in this thesis a challenging and rewarding endeavor. Not only has the review of material pertaining to the novel given me an insight into Melville, but it has also unlocked a most difficult and ambiguous book.
