Abstract
An investigation has been made of a beginning organic chemistry experiment, the hydrolysis of 2 - chloro-2-methylpropane. The experiment studied was by J. A. Landgrebe in J.Chem.Ed., 41, 567 (1964). Also utilized was a similar experiment by R. Q. Brewster, C. A. Vanderwerf, and W. E. McEwen, “Unified Experiments in Organic Chemistry”, 2d ed., D. Van Nostrand Co., Inc ., Princeton, N.J., 1964. Comparisons have been made between student data obtained in an organic chemistry laboratory and data obtained under controlled conditions. Possible explanations for the lack of uniformity between the student data and the controlled experiment data have been formulated. Dimethylsulfoxide, dioxane, ethyl alcohol, and methyl alcohol were substituted for the solvent acetone for comparison of results. Methyl orange indicator was also tested in addition to the recommended bromphenol blue.
