Abstract

A study was conducted at Moore’s Ponds, nine miles south and six miles west of Hays, Ellis County, Kansas. The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between plant communities and the water depths in these communities in a Western Kansas hydrosere. The following measurements were recorded during the growing season of 1965: 1) selection and mapping of plant communities, 2) weekly water depth recordings within each community, 3) species list for each community, 4) foliage cover by species in each community, and 5) standing crop production by each community. Due to an excessive amount of precipitation that fell during the growing season in which the study was initiated and completed, the results are not necessarily typical of a hydrosere in Western Kansas.
