The man on the left is George Sternberg and his hat is off. He holds a pickaxe and is chiseling below the plaster covered fossil. He is crouched down towards the ground. A dark horse is standing nearby wearing a harness and a horse collar. The horse is hitched to a small wooden sled. Piled-up rock and sand debris are visible, as well as several plateaus in the background. Several tarps and a whisk broom are nearby. Another bucket sits towards the bottom left corner of the photo.
