Artist's Statement
In this piece, I used the Augustus Prima Porta as a guide, and created a 9 piece armored bust and shoulder set made of discarded aluminum cans. Each of the pieces are embossed by hand with detailed engravings reminiscent of baroque, gothic, and classical roman imagery. I wanted to contrast the history of classical creation with the future of our world by combining ancient works from across time with the "trash" currently plaguing the environment. I wanted this piece to be a reminder of how not only was the material we throw away once used to create masterful works considered art, but also how we can utilize the scrap in this way again to benefit the future of art and our world.
