Artist's Statement
The Lightning Thief was my favorite book when I was younger, and I was really excited to try a unique take on a book jacket. It's a combination of digital illustration and graphic design. I painted all the yarn/needles/shears in Procreate, then did the rest in Adobe Illustrator. Early in the book, the main character sees the Three Fates as old grannies knitting blue socks, until one of them cuts a string, and the rest of the series, the main character wonders who's life string was cut, until the very end when he finds out. The book centers on a cross country road trip from Long Island to LA, so when folded out, the yarn creates the United States, and the string down the middle, their path taken. I also drew the author's portrait as a knitting pattern.
