Description

This black and white photograph was taken on October 31, 1952, at Sheridan Coliseum at Fort Hays Kansas State College. The student standing, Ronald Gridley, portrays William A. Lewis at a dinner celebrating the college's independence from Emporia. Five men and women onstage in metal folding chairs behind a rectangular table. They are clapping for the Gridley wearing a dark suit, white dress shirt, and dark-colored tie. Behind the speaker is a sheer drape supported by cords. A young woman wears a sheer, ribbon-trim skirt–a man with a goatee, glasses, an ascot, and wingtip shoes sits behind the speaker–the young woman on the right wears a floor-length, satin dress. Men are wearing light and dark suit coats over white formal shirts with dark and light ties. On the platform stage is a wooden table with a white tablecloth. Two condenser microphones are on tall microphone stands in the front. About seven people are sitting and standing among wooden auditorium chairs in the background. The letter “C” is painted on the auditorium wall.
