Abstract
The problem chosen for this thesis was to use colored chalk as a painting medium. All the drawings included have been executed on brown kraft paper which was found to be the most satisfactory for colored chalk. Charcoal papers with a tooth were used during the experimental stages, but the desired results were not obtained. The use of colored chalk, or pastel as it is commonly called, has been neglected as a major painting medium in the twentieth century. As an expressive medium, the writer has found colored chalk best suited to the technique of short strokes or lines to build up transparent layers of color.
