Abstract

This study was designed to ascertain and record the childhood, educational, and professional experiences of Edgar Francis McNeil. Mr. McNeil always portrayed a sincere interest in each athlete he coached during his thirty seven year career. As a coach, McNeil was a motivator and strong disciplinarian developing athletes philosophically and professionally, as well as physically. Both historical and retrospective methods were employed in this thesis. The retrospective survey was used to provide most of the primary data. Historical data was gathered to substantiate information generated by the retrospective survey. A majority of the data used in the McNeil Biography is unpublished. Therefore, use of primary source data and not previously recorded historical material created a significant variation from the standard approach to historical research.
