Abstract
The purpose of the researcher was to investigate burnout in teachers of public and private or parochial schools. The independent variables were: (1) type of school, (2) gender, (3) total years of teaching experience, and (4) grade level assignment. The dependent variables were: (1) emotional exhaustion scores, (2) depersonalization scores, and (3) personal accomplishment scores. The sample consisted of 115 teachers. Each of the four null hypotheses was tested using a three-way analysis of variance. A total of 42 comparisons, excluding 42 recurring comparisons, were tested. Twelve of the 42 comparisons were statistically significant at the .05 level. One of the 12 significant comparisons was for the main effect gender and the dependent variable depersonalization. Male teachers reported a greater amount of depersonalization than female teachers. The results of the present study appeared to support the following generalizations: 1. An association among type of school, gender, and emotional exhaustion, 2. An association among type of school, total years of teaching experience, and emotional exhaustion, 3. An association among type of school, total years of teaching experience, and depersonalization, 4. An association among type of school, gender, and personal accomplishment, 5. An association among gender, total years of teaching experience, and personal accomplishment, 6. An association among type of school, grade level assignment, and emotional exhaustion, 7. An association among gender, grade level assignment, and emotional exhaustion, S . An association among type of school, gender, grade level assignment, and emotional exhaustion, 9.
