Abstract
My thesis exhibition represents my search for a personally satisfying balance of form and content. My particular artistic interest is the expressionistic figure. As an undergraduate, my paintings consisted largely of single primitive figures set in similar environments and painted with flat planes of arbitrary color. These works had a certain presence but relatively few of them seemed to be really effective. As a beginning graduate student, I first attempted to combine mildly abstract figures with slightly more sophisticated pain handling, but with little success. My breakthrough came when I started worrying less about the preciseness of the figures and any predetermined content and concentrated instead upon the pure pleasure of working with the materials.
