Abstract
This study attempted to find environmental antecedents of Ellis’ irrational beliefs. Seventy-eight undergraduate psychology students were each administered four questionnaires measuring: irrational beliefs as described by Ellis (1962); recalled parent-child relations along the dimensions of aggressiveness, strictness, affection, indulgence, competence, and identification; various biographical information recalled from childhood; and social desirability responding. Correlations among the various scores were not significant; suggesting that currently held irrational beliefs are generally not dependent upon childhood environmental factors.
