Abstract
This study covers the life of one of Kansas' comparatively unknown writers, Mateel Howe Farnham, and provides a critical analysis of all her literary endeavors. The daughter of Edgar Watson Howe, Mrs. Farnham through her writing attempted to prove to her father that she was a competent, level- headed woman. While the appearance of her literary endeavors in itself proved this point, she also tried to prove it by writing stories the themes of which showed that she deeply believed that women should be free and independent individuals. All but one of her efforts were written with this thought in mind.
