Abstract

This thesis endeavors to examine the late orchestral style of Bela Bartok, as exemplified in the following works: Music for String Instruments, Percussion and Celesta (1936); Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (1938); Concerto for Orchestra (1943); Third Piano Concerto (1945). The period of his life in which they were written insures maturity of expression. These works are among his most frequently performed compositions and are likely to continue to be so. Furthermore, they present an opportunity to examine his treatment of the full range of commonly used western instruments.
