Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to study the cobalt complex with 2,4,6-tripyridyl-s-triazine, a new reagent. The investigation was carried out spectrophotometrically at room temperature. It was found that an orange-brown complex was formed by the interaction of 2,4,6-tripyridyl-s-triazine with cobalt(II) in both aqueous solution and 90% ethanol. However, the complex shows a relatively larger molar extinction coefficient in water than in 90% ethanol. The maximum absorption of the complex is at 363 mil. The optimum pH was found to be between 4.0 and 6.4 in aqueous solution. The molar composition of the complex as revealed by both the continuous variations technique and molar ratio method was found to be 1-2 (metal: ligand). Absorption conforms to Beer's law from 1 x 10-5 M to 1. 5 x 10-4 N, and no fading was observed for a period of 48 hours in both aqueous solution and 90% ethanol. Investigation demonstrated that the ligand produces full color development when present in B-fold excess. The effect of various ions on color formation is also reported in this paper. It is found that TPTZ can be applied in the colorimetric determination of cobalt in the absence of iron, mercury, silver, bismuth, and cyanide ions, and in the presence of small amounts of copper, nickel, and oxalate ions.
