Abstract

This paper wiII begin with an attempt to collect and condense some of the work that has been done on the problem of iodinating phenols and reIated compounds. Then an attempt wiII be made to determine what the optimum conditions are under which iodination of m-cresol will occur. With these conditions in mind, an effective method of following the rate of iodination wiII be presented. To insure a proper interpretation of the rate studies, analyses of structure and content of the reaction end product wiII be reported. As a result of the investigation, a mechanism for the iodination of m-cresol wiII be postulated.
