A man stands in the middle of this photo. He is wearing boots, pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and a wide-brimmed hat. He is using a 6-foot long hand drill to bore into a large canyon-like opening in the ground. The man is standing close to the edge of the gap in the rock, almost looking as if he could fall in if he were to take one more step forward. Behind the man are slopes with vertical erosion, as well as a pile of rock fragments at the base of one slope.
