Artist's Statement

This is a modern take on a momentomori painting. As someone who grew up with debilitating asthma, it was my perspective on mortality. The glass and the butterflies are meant to represent fragility, but also monarchs fly south for the winter. It's a reference to my great great grandfather, who also had my condition, who always had to go south in the winter because lack of modern medicine combined with the cold made breathing extremely difficult for him. The teddy bear is meant to represent the child all tangled in tubes with a mask on, and the books are meant to represent how I, and many other chronically ill kids, turned to reading, learning, and escapism, because we couldn't do things other kids could. The whole thing is meant to be a representation of people who grow up with chronic illnesses.
