SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Abstract

Experiential learning provides students with valuable opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. In HHP 340: Measurement and Evaluation at Fort Hays State University (FHSU), students engaged in hands-on application by designing and implementing an athletic combine. The combine featured a comprehensive battery of tests, including the 20-yard dash, vertical jump, wall sit test, medicine ball throw, 3-minute plank test, 5-10-5 pro agility drill, L agility drill, and standing broad jump.

A vital component of this initiative was a community partnership with advanced weight training students from Hays High School and Thomas More Prep-Marian High School. These high school athletes participated in the combine, providing FHSU students the opportunity to practice test administration, data collection, and evaluation in a practical setting. This collaboration allowed university students to refine their skills in test standardization, participant instruction, and performance analysis while also offering high school athletes insight into their athletic capabilities.

To enhance the accuracy and reliability of the performance assessments, students integrated JAWKU Speed Technology, a cutting-edge wearable timing system. JAWKU was used in the 20-yard dash, vertical jump, and agility drills to provide precise, real-time data, eliminating human error in timing and improving the overall validity of the results. This hands-on experience with sports performance technology exposed students to modern assessment tools commonly used in professional athletic training and research, reinforcing the role of technology in performance evaluation.

This project exemplifies the power of experiential learning in bridging academic knowledge with professional application. Through this initiative, students in HHP 340 gained essential hands-on experience in fitness assessment while developing meaningful connections with the local community. The partnership not only enhanced the learning experience for university students but also contributed to the development of young athletes by providing them with valuable performance feedback.
