What is in Big Creek? Water Analysis of Big Creek
Abstract
Big Creek is a vital source of water for livestock and irrigation around Hays, Kansas, however the water quality is poorly understood and is not regularly monitored. A total of fourteen water samples were taken along Big Creek within the county of Ellis, to better understand the water quality. Parameters such as pH, alkalinity, and dissolved oxygen were measured in the field and samples were sent to for the cation and anion analysis. The results showed that most were within acceptable limits, with the exceptions of manganese and potassium. These concentration levels are relatively higher, and is suggested to be due to the agricultural activities in the area.
