The first edition of the Walker Talker was published on Friday, March 05, 1943 as the official news publication of the Walker Army Air Base. The Walker Talker replaced the previous base newsletter, The Buck Sheet . The Gremlin Post, the newsletter for the 400th Sub-Depot, was published as a section within the paper until 1944 when its content was incorporated as part of the larger publication.The Walker Talker was published weekly on Fridays until December 1943 when publication moved to Saturdays. Publication moved to the second and fourth Saturdays after the Japanese surrender in August 1945. The final edition of the Walker Talker was published on December 8, 1945.

    This color 15-page newsletter is a printed document about the Walker Army Air Base. The document is listed as Volume 3, Number 36, published on Saturday, December 8, 1945. This is the final edition of the Walker Talker newsletter. The Walker Air Base was located between Walker and Victoria, Kansas. The first and last pages have a red ink border. The first page features a photograph of different newsletter pages. An illustration of the number 30 is in the center of the photograph. Page 2 contains the headline of the “History of Walker Airfield.” A black-and-white photograph of two B-29 airplanes is featured in the bottom left corner. Page 3 includes a black-and-white photograph at the top of the page. The photograph is of the hangars at Walker with airplanes lined along the airfield. Page 4 depicts a comic illustration titled “The Wolf” by Sansone on the upper right side. The Walker Talker credits are listed on the upper left side. The lower left side features an editorial. The lower right side depicts an illustration of a soldier pulling boxes out of a bag. The headline reads “Laugh - … if you must!” “Hawkwiz by Bob Hawk” is the headline at the bottom of the page. Page 5 features the headlines “Walker Talker Takes ‘30’ As Final Edition Rolls Off Presses” and “‘Kiss and Tell,’ Br’dway Hit To Play At Base Theater Dec. 21.” There is a hand-drawn comic illustration at the bottom of the page depicting a soldier on a jeep, close to a cliff. Page 6 is missing from this newsletter. Page 7 features the Sports section. Several other articles are printed on this page. Page 8 contains the headline “What Every Veteran Should Know.” Four illustrations are included with this article. Page 9 continues the article on page 8 and contains the headline “About Life in a Glen Plaid Sui[t]” Three illustrations are included on this page. Page 10 contains the “Chapel’s Message” and includes a black-and-white photograph of a church. A comic illustration is on the bottom right corner. Page 11 features several articles and two comic illustrations. Page 12 features the comic illustration “Guest Room” by Machamer. On the bottom left of the page is an article with the headline “Ike Succeeds Marshalls, Nimitz Replaces King.” The article goes on to detail how President Truman appointed General Dwight D. Eisenhower as Army Chief of Staff. Also included in the article is the appointment of Chester W. Nimitz as Chief of Naval Operations. Other headlines included on the page are “Big Food Firms Making Up Wartime Labor Shortages”, “Farm Aid for Vets”, “Supreme Court Wants A Look at Varga Girl”, and “White Rajah to Return To Kingdom of Sarawak.” Page 13 has three illustrations on the page, as well as 7 short articles. Page 14 continues “History of Walker” from Page 3. There are two illustrations on this page. On the top left is an article with the headline “S/Sgt. Wm. A Wahl King for a Day.” Page 15 continues “the inquiring line” from Page 13. The article headline is an illustration of a thinking man. On the page is a black-and-white photograph of Kay Williams captioned “‘Sugar And Spice And Everything Nice.’” Page 16 contains one illustration and one black-and-white photograph. The column on the right of the page is headlined “Movies in Town” and has movie theatres listed from Russell and Hays, Kansas, respectively. On the bottom and right of the page is a red border. Tape covers part of the page next to the headline reading “Star Theatre.” There is handwriting on the first page stating “December 8”. The edges are torn on the left and right edges of each page.

    This color 12-page newsletter is a printed document about the Walker Army Air Base. The document is listed as Volume 3, Number 35, published on Saturday, November 21, 1945. This is a typo, as the newsletter came out November 24, 1945. The Walker Air Base was located between Walker and Victoria, Kansas. The first and last page have a red ink border. The first page features an illustration of a soldier playing a trumpet to a turkey atop a globe. The illustration is signed by David Kleiman. The featured headline reads “Thanksgiving Dinner Menu” with the subscript “Page 5.” At the bottom of the page in the red border is printed text that reads “BUY VICTORY BONDS.” Page 2 has the headline “Adjutant Courageous!” Page 3 has a black-and-white photograph on the top left of a geisha from Tokyo. The headline for that article reads “Nice Girl.” There are three illustrations on the page as well. One is the header for the question and answer segment “the inquiring line.” Page 4 has an illustration by Sansone on the top righthand side titled “The Wolf.” The text on the comic states “He’s right! The stars ARE out tonight!” On the top left side of the page is the masthead of the newsletter. Before listing the editors, the commanding officer is named as “MAJOR HARRY C. SMITH.” The editors are listed as follows: “EDITOR…Sgt. David Kleiman,” “ASSOCIATE EDITOR…Sgt. Marvin E. Tong,” “SPORTS…Sgt. H. W. Sharpley[,]Cpl. H. Morales.” and “PRINTER…News Pub. Co., Hays, Kansas.” Underneath the masthead is a Thanksgiving Day message from the Commanding Officer. A joke section is on the bottom right. There is an illustration alongside the title “LAUGH—...if you must!” On the bottom left is an illustration of a man accompanying “HAWKWIZ” by Bob Hawk. On Page 5 are two illustrations on both the bottom left and right corners. The central article features a Thanksgiving Dinner Menu and a greeting from Major Harry Smith, Capt. Francis J. Murphy, Capt. Arnold Schwartz, Lt. Reuben Rosen, M/Sgt. Sal Mallo, and S/Sgt. Edmond Ramler. On the top right the article title reads “Germans Are Starting To Show Teeth Again.” The article includes information about rising anti-American sentiments in Germany. Page 6 has an edition of “Male Call" by Milton Caniff titled “There’s a Kid With Crust.” Three other articles are on the page, titled “AAF to Discharge 4,000 Aircrew Trainees,” “Bataan Vet Finds Home Life Dull— Re-aps,” and “Oil Jobs Will Increase After Auto Reconversion.” Page 7 is the sports page. There are two illustrations on the bottom left and right corners. In the central column, on the top of the page is the word “Sports” in a hand-brushed style. Page 8 features two illustrations at the bottom of the page, as well as a photograph of Gen. George C. Marshall near the top of the page. The article featuring the photograph is titled “Army, Navy Split on Joint Command.” The contents of said article are about a proposed merger of the Army, Navy, and Air Force under one unified command. The other five articles on the page are other pieces of news regarding conflicts. Page 9 includes a large black-and-white photograph of Nazi civil and military leaders captured when Germany collapsed. The photo depicts many men. The men in the front row are sitting, while the men behind them are standing. An illustration is at the bottom of the page under the article “Christmas Mail for Overseas Cut Two-thirds.” There are four other articles on the page covering job openings and funding for the military. In the bottom left corner is the section “BOB HAWK ANSWERS HAWKWIZ.” Page 10 features one illustration and one photograph. The photograph is of a church under the headline “Chaplain’s Message.” Page 11 has an illustration, most of which is not visible due to damage. On the top left is a photograph of the “Kansas Farmer;” an original B-29 is placed next to the article explaining that the historic plane is now stationed at the Walker Army Air Field. Page 12 is the last page of the newsletter, featuring a comic titled “The She Wolf.” There is a red border alongside the right of the page and the bottom of the page. On page 12 there is a tear where the page number goes. There are pieces of tape covering up minor damage on several pages of the issue. On the cover page there is the date “November 24, 1945” written in graphite under the red border but above the illustration.

    This color 12-page newsletter is a printed document about the Walker Army Air Base. The document is listed as Volume 3, Number 34, published on Saturday, November 10, 1945. The Walker Air Base was located between Walker and Victoria, Kansas. The first and last page have a red ink border. The title page includes three headlines: “Wanna Buy Some Surplus Goods?” with the subscript “Page 3”, “Victory Loan Drive Needs Your Support!” with the subscript “Page 5”, and “Walker Quintet Plays Fort Hays November 14” with the subscript “See Sports Page.” Below the three headlines is an illustration signed by Kleiman with a black box in the middle sporting the text “WHY THE VICTORY LOAN?” Leading out from the box are eight black lines all leading to small illustrations accompanied by text. The text reads “G.I. BILL OF RIGHTS,” “PREVENTION OF INFLATION,” “PAYMENT OF OBLIGATIONS IN ACHIEVMENT OF VICTORY,” “SAVINGS FOR THE FUTURE”, “TO KEEP AMERICA—AMERICAN,” “HOSPITALIZATION, CARE AND REHABILITATION,” “VETERANS MUST BE BROUGHT HOME FROM OVERSEAS,” and finally “ARMY & NAVY MUST BE MAINTAINED.” In the red border along the bottom of the page reads “SERVE IN SILENCE.” Page 2 features an illustration by Pvt. W Skorski and a black-and-white photograph of Dan Woods. The article on the top left is titled “The Story of a Separation Center.” The column on the right features the article “Dan Woods, ARC Field Director moves to Camp Grant.” The article details how the field director of the Red Cross, Dan W. Woods, was positioned at Camp Grant following eight months of service at Walker Army Air Field. Page 3 includes an illustration in the bottom right corner. The top right article on the page is titled “Interested In Purchasing Surplus Goods? 3 Disposal Agencies In This Area.” The top left article sports the title “U.S. Civil Service Offers Jobs, Vacations, Security.” On the top left of page 4 the masthead for the newsletter appears. Before listing the editors, the commanding officer is named as “MAJOR HARRY C. SMITH.” The editors are listed as follows: “EDITOR…Sgt. David Kleiman,” “ASSOCIATE EDITOR…Sgt. Marvin E. Tong,” “SPORTS…Sgt. H. W. Sharpley[,]Cpl. H. Morales.” and “PRINTER…News Pub. Co., Hays, Kansas.” Under the masthead is the Commanding Officer’s Message, urging readers to invest their money into victory bonds. The top right of the page features the recurring comic “The Wolf” by Sgt. Sansone. Under that illustration is another illustration, featuring the headline “LAUGH—...if you must!” The bottom left of the page features the question-and-answer segment “HAWKWIZ” by Bob Hawk. Page 5 features one black-and-white photograph in the middle column at the top of the page. Featured in the photograph are a group of people resting at a Halloween party held at the NCO club. Below the photo and caption, among the articles on the page, is an article titled “Victory Loan Drive Needs Your Serious Cooperation.” On Page 6, the top of the page holds a “MALE CALL” comic from Mitlon Caniff titled “Braille Detail.” Along the left side of the page is an article titled “Not Too Serious News of Nation,” which covers small-scale news from across the country. Below “MALE CALL” is an article titled “Courts Weigh World War II Vets Reemployment Rights.” Page 7 is the sports page. The title of the page is printed in the top center in a hand-brushed font. Below the title of the page are two black-and-white photographs of football players Glenn Davis, Dick Whiting, Tony Minishi, and John Martin. There are four other articles on the page covering the left and right columns. Page 8 has an illustration in the top right and a black-and-white photograph near the bottom left. The photograph is of Betty Ann Simms. There are more sports articles on this page, alongside the article “Just For The Rise, USO Camp Show To Play At Base Theater Nov. 21.” Page 9 has an illustration near the bottom right of two women. Other articles on this page include the continuation of “the inquiring line” and “BOB HAWK ANSWERS HAWKWIZ.” Page 10 has a black-and-white photograph of a church below the article titled “Chaplain’s Message.” The article on the right side of the page is labeled “Propose Laws of Interest To Veterans of War II.” Near the bottom right is an illustration with the caption “... must be the bottom of the barrel!” Page 11 has a cartographic illustration of Manchuria alongside the article “Manchuria Goes Back to The Chinese.” There are two more articles on the page and an illustration on the bottom right. Page 12 features “The She Wolf” comic in the top center column. There are articles surrounding the comic featuring more news, as well as listings for movies in the area. On the bottom and right side of the page are a printed red border. There is minor damage on the right side of the newsletter, often covered with tape. On the cover, above the words “Victory Loan” are the words “November 10,1945” written in pencil. On the top lefthand corner, “K 358 W151W” is written.
