JOHN MORRELL & COMPANY, Topeka, Kansas "A KANSAS INSTITUTION" John Morrell & Co. was founded in England in 1827, a hundred and twenty-one years ago; came to America in 1865 and established a packing plant at Ottumwa, Iowa, in 1877. Later, additional plants were established at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, 1909; and another purchased in Topeka in 1931. The Topeka plant alone spent more than 30 million dollars last year for livestock, and currently has a payroll of approximately 3 1/2 million dollars annually. Morrell's in Topeka maintains a daily cash market for livestock, and manufactures the nationally famous Morrell Pride Hams and Bacon and a complete line of meat products, as well as the famous Red Heart Dog Food.
