Abstract

Humpty Dumpty, a Comic Opera in Six Scenes is basically organized in the traditional opera form. It is preceded by an overture, and contains "numbers" connected by the dialogue in recitative form. This opera contains seven numbers: an aria, two duets, two quintets, and two choruses. Also included are a dance section, and a minuet/trio/da capo minuet in which the musicians, a quartet, are situated on the stage with the characters and supply the music for all of scene three. The harmonic style of the numbers is mostly traditional, the melodics being simple so as to reflect the simplicity of the story and of the characters. The vocal lines and underlying harmonies of the recitative are less traditional; here the composer attempts to express more closely the character of natural speech.
