Description

This black and white photograph features a fish within a fish fossil. A Gillicus arcuatus is inside a Xiphactinus molossus. The head of the Xiphactinus faces left, and the entire bone structure and fins are visible. The Gillicus arcuatus is underneath the bones in the center. The specimen is embedded in plaster and a wooden frame. Cope described Portheus molossus as a junior synonym of Xiphactinus audax. There is a reflection of the fossil at the bottom of the image.
