Description
This black and white photograph features a Portheus skeleton being excavated and processed in the field west of Elkader, Kansas. The fish was found in the base of a rock formation with its head close to a big hole in the wall of the formation. The tail portion has been processed and a frame is set up around it. There are supplies next to the left edge of the hole. This fossil became a part of the collections at the Denver Museum of Natural History.
