Collected and Prepared by staff of School of Mines. Rapid City, S. Dakota. A FOSSIL MARINE LIZARD This sea reptile known as Platecarpus belongs to the great extinct family of Mosasaurs. The specimen was found in the lower Pierre shale formation about twenty-three miles west of Edgemont, South Dakota. The bones are in position as found except that the skeleton has been turned over. The rear paddles and much of the tail are missing. The full length of the animal in life was perhaps twenty feet. Reptiles of this general character lived in considerable numbers in late Cretaceous time, and this individual swam in the seas which then covered the region of the Black Hills. Mounted Dec. 1930 by James Bump. '29 No. P301
