Description

This black and white photograph features the "Field Museum group in Canada, before leaving for Patagonia. E.S. Riggs, head of the South American expedition, is in center; J.B. Abbott is at the far right. Five men are sitting in folding chairs facing towards the camera, in front of a single tent. The first man from the left is George Sternberg. He is wearing a flat cap with black pants, white suspenders, and a button-up long-sleeved shirt, and has his hands on his knees. The second man is Anthony Dombrosky and he sits with legs crossed wearing a fedora, and kerchief at his neck with his hands in his lap. The third man is Elmer Riggs and he is facing slightly to the right of the camera, from the photographer's viewpoint, and wears a black vest and pants with a white long-sleeved shirt and a hat. The fourth man is Elmer's son, Calvin Harold Riggs and he is sitting with his arms crossed looking down and to the left of the camera, from the photographer's viewpoint. He is wearing slim leggings that lace up on the outside of the calf. The fifth man is John Abbott and he is sitting with his legs crossed and one hand on his knee. He is wearing a fedora, black vest, and a long-sleeved shirt. All men are wearing leather work boots. The tent behind the group has wood sides and a white canvas top with a stove pipe protruding from the right side, from the photographer's perspective. Immediately behind the tent rises a rock outcropping. Shovels and pickaxes rest to the right side of the tent. Handwriting is below the photograph.
