Description

This black and white photograph features a portrait of a man sitting and is wearing a suit. Reuben Welch Sheriff (his prisoner) The only crime reported in the Stafford Courier and The County Capital during October and November of 1920 was a robbery that took place at Wilson Clothing Co. (owned by E.J. Wilson and P.B. Ardrey) in Stafford on Oct. 9. Stolen items included 62 suits of clothing, 16 hats, 36 pairs of men's silk hose, 65 silk shirts, 8 vests, 15 overcoats and one sheep-lined coat. Similar robberies had occurred at Plevna, Abbyville and Nickerson. Sheriff Welch was called and arrived in a short while. All the possible means were used to spread the report to officials in this and surrounding states in an effort to apprehend the criminals. It was speculated the robberies were committed by a gang that is well organized and prepared to escape capture. In the Oct. 28, 1920 edition of The County Capital, the editor lamented that lack of space has forced The Capital to omit much interesting matter both news and advertising, this week. Because of elections, all of the space in both newspapers was dedicated to candidates and results, and there never was a follow-up story to the robbery. We can only speculate as to whether the prisoner in these mug shots was one of the robbers or not.
