Mercury Spacecraft Friendship 7 Friendship 7 is the Mercury spacecraft in which astronaut John H. Glenn, Jr., became the first American to orbit the Earth, February 20, 1962. Glen circled the Earth three times at an altitude which varied between 162 and 261 km (101-162 mi). The flight took 4 hr, 55 min and provided data on the function of the human body under the condition of weightlessness of orbital flight. Height: 2.9 m (9ft, 6 in) Gross weight: 1,300 kg (2,900 lb) Maximum diameter: 1.8 m (6 ft) Orbital speed: 28,200 km/hr (17,500 mph)
