John H. Glenn, Jr. July 19, 1921- Best Known For: On February 20, 1962, John H. Glenn Jr. became the first American to orbit the Earth. Background: John Glenn Began his aviation career in 1942 when he joined the Naval Aviation Cadet Program. He received his Marine Corps Commission in 1943 and saw combat flying duty in World War II and the Korean War. His postwar flying duties and determination for excellence let him to become a Navy test pilot, and in 1959 he was selected for the first NASA astronaut group. John Glenn orbited Earth in the Mercury-Atlas 6, Friendship 7. His three-orbit flight lasted four hours, 55 minutes. In 1964, he retired from NASA and the Marine Corps with the rank of Colonel and joined private industry. In 1974, John Glenn was elected U.S. Senator from his native state, Ohio.
