61-MR4-84 National Aeronautics and Space Administration For immediate release July 22, 1961. 5:00 p.m. EVERYTHING A-OKAY!! - Project Mercury Astronaut Alan B. Shepard, grins approval as Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's second man-in-space calmly announces that MR-4 spacecraft and pilot are ready for launch, Astronaut John H. Glenn, intently watches television monitor from over Shepard's shoulder during final minutes of countdown July 21.
