Description
This black and white photograph features a roundhouse. "Santa Fe Roundhouse area, Newton, Kansas. View is looking north. Large building in center, south of tracks, is old Pintsch Gas Plant Long narrow building to left, north of the tracks, is car repair building (Big Rip). Building to left and north of car repair building is tank shops. Next building to right is blacksmith shops. Next building to right is backshops; flue tumbler and sander were in southwest end. Small building on east end of backshops is first power plant. Dark spot to east are oil vats to soak dry waste with brass springs used to refill dope buckets. East of this building is old oil house (roundhouse yard office). Note that southwest stall (No. 1) is even with oil house. Full view of south side of second power plant on northwest corner of roundhouse. Firebrick storage building to the northeast of roundhouse. Building to east of east water tank is early switchmen's shanty. Long narrow dark objects south of switch shanty are two gas-electric motor cars (doodlebugs) possibly for Train Nos. 13 and 14, the Newton-Coffeyville run which arrived in Newton at 12:55 p.m. and departed at 3:15 p.m. One of these laid over every day.
