Description

This black and white photograph features a horse splashing in the river after leaving the scow. A man is holding onto a flagpole and ushering a dark-colored horse out from the tent on their scow, grounded against the riverbank. The horse is splashing into the shallow river water near the bank. Another man, at the left of the photo, is holding onto the horse's lead rope. Plant life and shrub brush covers the riverbank and pokes through the water. Handwriting is below the photograph. "George F. Sternberg, now working on behalf of the Geological Survey of Canada, operated a scow-based camp on the Red Deer River between Red Deer and the Munson ferry near Drumheller. Sternberg was assisted by Jacey Glen Mayberry (died ca. 1950; Mayberry 1985) from Red Deer, J.A. Smith, George Housten, and Peter A. Bungart (1876–1948). "
