A black and white photo of a woman, Anna Sternberg, standing by a Portheus skeleton that is in the process of being excavated at the base of a rock formation west of Elkader, Kansas. The tail part of the fish can be seen in a frame that has been set up around it. Opposite the woman are a number of supplies, including pails and large bags. There is a big hole in the wall of the rock formation to the left of the woman. Behind the rock formation stands a white tent. The prairie is in the background. This fossil became a part of the collections at the Denver Museum of Natural History.
