Artist's Statement

My story is a papercutting piece. It's a mirror that I can see my life in past present and future in different stages as I "morph" through life. When I created this piece, I also wrote what it really meant to me.

When I look in this mirror I see my life in the past, present and future. Growing up in a small midwest town protected from the dangers of the real world. I felt safe and comfortable, however you can't just live comfortably forever, so I essentially felt caged. As I grew older I read books and in those books learned new things about people's stories and different places around the world. I never thought of leaving my small town but now it's all I wanted to do even though I love it dearly. I felt there was more for me out in the world and didn't want protecting from it anymore. I yearn to be the protagonist in my story that is always traveling and being out in the world and having a successful life and future filled with all my dreams. The best way for those things to happen is if you embrace the fears of change, accept it and break free and fly. As free as a bird.
