Artist's Statement

Kate Blanco was born into the over-socialization and zeitgeist of a digitalized and post-9/11 world. Despite this, drawing natural subjects became a fulfilling past time in Blanco's youth. Blanco's natural eye for light, anatomy and weight as a child has been consistent through life.
Initially a graphic design major, the 2020 pandemic gave a lot of insight on what Blanco found horrid and ugly about the world, and how alienating technology and design related industries are. Blanco returned to mastering traditional mediums such as drawing and oil. Influences of these works are Chaos Theory, the theory of evolution, speculative evolution, James Gurney, and Frank Frazetta. The atmospheric and serene natural scenes are a reaction to the increasingly bleak and polluted world and loss of biodiversity.
