Artist's Statement

This chiaroscuro-inspired charcoal self-portrait was created during a time when I was grieving and processing the complex loss of my mother while still trying to balance my work life, student life, and social life. As someone who tends to avoid complicated problems, it was a way for me to finally face the feelings of burnout and dissociation that I had been struggling with for months. It truly represents a version of myself that was exhausted, hollow, and disconnected.
