Artist's Statement

This color pencil and oil pastel still life represents different aspects of myself metaphorically through personal objects. For example, in the left corner, closest to the viewer, are my headphones. I'm almost always listening to music. It's gotten to a point where I am almost dependent on them to provide me with physical comfort, even if I'm not listening to anything. In a sense, it's filled an awkward space in my life that is slightly discomforting. The colorful woven scarf illustrates my style; I've developed a signature style that boosts my confidence throughout the day and makes me more approachable to others. The antique classical bust sculpture represents my passion for art history, which is my major. My claw clip is a daily accessory for me; lastly, there is the cobalt blue beer bottle containing my pothos plant, which my mom gifted to me. This is of great importance; not only does it represent me as a gentle person who's gone through personal growth and change, but it also shows how they were alike in many ways, sharing the positive and negative characteristics of being a mom and daughter.
